Expert Periodic Inspection Tests throughout Cornwall

Thorough electrical inspection & testing for safe, compliant installations in Cornwall

For many years, electrical safety checks were commonly referred to as a Periodic Inspection Test. While the terminology has evolved, the purpose remains the same: ensuring your electrical installation is safe, compliant and performing    as it should.

Today, the modern equivalent of a periodic inspection test is the EICR – Electrical Installation Condition Report. This change reflects a more structured, transparent and standardised approach to assessing the condition of fixed electrical installations in line with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).

Evans Electrical Limited carry out full Periodic Inspection Tests / EICRs for commercial, industrial, education, healthcare and public-sector clients in Cornwall, delivering the reassurance that your installation is safe, legally compliant and properly maintained.

What Is a Periodic Inspection Test?

Historically, a Periodic Inspection Test involved checking the condition of an electrical installation at regular intervals. It included visual inspection, testing of circuits, and reporting on defects or deterioration.

Over time, the industry has refined and formalised this process. Today, the recognised standard is the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)—a more comprehensive and clearly documented method of evaluating electrical safety.

Although the name has changed, many clients and facility managers still refer to it as a periodic inspection, periodic test, or fixed-wire testing. Evans Electrical delivers all services to the current EICR standard, ensuring full compliance and traceability.

Our Periodic Inspection Test / EICR Service in Cornwall

Every periodic inspection test we carry out in Cornwall follows a structured, safety-led process designed to assess the condition of your installation and identify any risks, non-compliances or areas of deterioration.

Preliminary Assessment

Before commencing inspection or testing, our engineers review:

  • Supply type and earthing arrangements
  • Service head condition and maximum demand
  • Distribution layout and any known system issues
  • As-built drawings, historical certification and O&M information

This ensures the inspection is planned safely and appropriately for the environment.

Full Visual Inspection

A comprehensive visual examination of the installation is completed, including:

  • Consumer units and distribution boards
  • Condition of meter tails, earthing and bonding
  • Cable routing, containment and mechanical protection
  • Sockets, switches, luminaires and electrical accessories
  • Protective devices including MCBs, RCDs and RCBOs
  • Suitability of equipment for the environment (IP rating)
  • Evidence of wear, overheating, damage or unapproved modifications
  • Fire stopping around cable penetrations

The visual inspection forms the foundation of the report and identifies many potential issues before testing begins.

Dead Testing (Circuits Isolated)

With the system safely isolated, engineers carry out:

  • Continuity of protective conductors (CPC)
  • Ring final continuity tests
  • Insulation resistance testing
  • Initial polarity verification
  • Confirmation of fault path and disconnection capabilities

These tests confirm that the installation’s core safety features are intact.

Live Testing (Energised Circuits)

Once the installation is proven safe to energise, we undertake:

  • Earth fault loop impedance (Zs) tests
  • Prospective fault current (PFC/PSCC) measurements
  • RCD/RCBO testing of trip times and disconnection performance
  • Final polarity checks
  • Functional testing of controls, isolators and safety devices

Distribution Board Inspection

Each distribution board undergoes a detailed internal inspection to verify:

  • Tightness of terminations
  • Integrity of busbars, MCBs and internal components
  • Circuit identification and correct labelling
  • Adequacy of earthing and bonding arrangements
  • Signs of overheating, corrosion or physical deterioration

Earthing & Bonding Verification

Ensuring the installation is properly earthed and bonded is essential for safe operation. We assess:

  • Main earthing conductor size and condition
  • Protective bonding to gas, water and structural steel
  • Supplementary bonding in applicable areas
  • Suitability of arrangements for TN-S, TN-C-S or TT systems

Assessment to BS 7671

Your periodic inspection test includes a detailed assessment of compliance with current wiring regulations, covering:

  • Protection against electric shock
  • Disconnection and fault protection adequacy
  • Suitability of protective devices
  • Surge protection requirements
  • Fire safety elements (including AFDD considerations)
  • Location-specific requirements (plant rooms, wet areas, outdoors, renewables, EV charging etc.)

Reporting of Observations

All issues are categorised using the current EICR coding system:

  • C1 – Immediate danger
  • C2 – Potentially dangerous
  • C3 – Improvement recommended
  • FI – Further investigation required

Clear narratives support each observation, giving you full visibility of the condition of your installation.

Certification & Handover

At completion, you receive:

  • Formal Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR)
  • Schedule of inspection items
  • Schedule of test results for each circuit
  • Summary of installation condition (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory)
  • Prioritised recommendations for remedial work

Our engineers will also walk you through the findings to ensure full understanding.
